Reader report 1

A few days after my prospective book editor sent the first reader's report to me, I finally opened and read it.

The reader suggested many revisions, some stylistic, others more substantial.  But at the end, hir advice to the press was to publish my book.

I'll take it!

Now to sit tight and wait for the second reader's report.

  1. Awesome! Congrats and best wishes for the second reader's report!

I was just saying earlier that I have no idea how to go about publishing an academic book even if I wanted to. I have an idea, but who knows if I could have time to get it done with a 4/4 load, two kids, and an attempt at having a life. Do you have any advice for how to start the initial process of trying to find a publisher, if I ever do have time? Do you send a proposal first? Or an entire manuscript? Or query places? I have no idea...

    1. Okay, first, I recommend you post about this on your blog, because you'll want to collate all the bits and bobs of advice that people give you. Believe me: you will want to have all this stuff accessible from a single place.

Second, the best way to start on this is two-fold.
      1. As recommended by the venerable Dr. Crazy, read From Dissertation to Book by William Germano. Helps a LOT.
      2. Read the step-by-step explanation of how to get started that Heu Mihi posted a few years ago:

And if you're still thirsty for more, you could always read my scattershot questions about this stuff:

    2. Thanks! I'll take a look.

Of course, my book idea has nothing to do with my dissertation, which I know is not the best way to go. But one must scratch where it itches, mustn't one? If I ever revisit my diss, it'll be in conference and/or article form. I like parts of it a lot, but the whole --after four years of simmering -- is no longer that great IMO. Parts of it, though, will see the light of day. I just need to work on the ideas that make me burn with excitement right now. I think that's the only way to pursue scholarship when one has small children. A call that can't be resisted is the only call you answer when you have kids.

  6. Well, it's one thing after another, n'est-ce pas? Just like love-interests. You wait and you wait, and just about when you decide that you've accepted that there's no point in waiting, nothing will come you way, bam, you get three knocking on your door simultaneously!

So, we have the job, we have the OK, now (since in many cultures things come in threes), what next????

    Muchos besos from CY!

I've been meaning to write, will do once finals and comps are out of the way.

In the meantime, thinking of you,

    AP

    1. Well...as a matter of fact, there is a third pleasant thing, but that is thoroughly unbloggable. Check your email.

  7. HOORAY!

This is good news. Better than beer-good news. Bourbon-good news, I'd say.
