Hired

Between you and me everyone on the internet who reads this blog, I'd have accepted the job even without the stuff I asked for.  But I got at least a little of that on top of the basics, and I am well pleased.  (Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the consensus that it was worth asking about moving expenses and conference travel!)

I called up the chair of the department today, and accepted the position.  Sent an email about it, too.  I have been hired for my first job as a professor.  What's that word the kids use?  Squeee!  Ah, that's it, right?

I'm gonna go make myself dinner and a drink, and be proud of myself for a little while, yes I am.

  7. HOORAY! And I'm glad it all got resolved so quickly. Here's to you, Dr. K!

And I'm with Sisyphus: if you feel comfortable sharing, I'd be really interested to know what they came up with--I think it's good for the profession to have as many data points as possible about what different kinds of institutions consider normal or doable, for different kinds of positions. (But if you're not comfortable sharing, that's totally understandable, too!)

  8. Thanks, everyone! I'm up late and still basking in my new-found serenity.

@Sisyphus & Flavia: On the off-chance that someone from my new place of employment stumbles onto this blog, I'm leery of quoting precise figures. Let us say that, without any hint of complaining on my part, I can recognize that they offered me a very small sum for moving expenses. I suspect it won't even cover the Uhaul costs from DOU-Town. The conference funding, while nothing wild, was a little more reasonable and in keeping with what I understand low-status positions have access to. In both cases, the money is coming from the department, as the sort of thing they can dig up if the new hire asks about it. The university at large has no interest in subsidizing my move or my conference travel. Since this position is VAP, I'm not surprised. Maybe at some point in the near future, I or we can blog about this issue in more detail, and set out a little clearing house of data points.

@Haphazard: I will drink to that! We both made it through a terrible year on the job market, and we're still standing. Well worth a drink.

  10. It sounds like you done good! I'm not sure whether we offer our own VAPs anything beyond a competitive salary and benefits--when I was a lecturer/VAP elsewhere I got diddly-squat.

And though my TT offer came with some relatively generous initial perks, the annual guaranteed travel budget for tenured/tt folks here is still small--it was raised last year, but is still in the triple digits. So if your new department came up with even a few hundred bucks in both categories, that's still real money. More importantly, I'd take it as a positive sign about their eagerness to have you and the likelihood that they'll be supportive and enthusiastic about you & your scholarship in other ways.

    Yay!
